LED vs LCD Displays

LED and LCD Displays are one of the biggest developments to ever happen in the modern century especially when it comes to being an essential tool in mass communication. While the two can be credited for their contributions in making visual technology more convenient for everybody, the debate between the two and which is better among them is still an ongoing discussion even up to today.

While both displays have their own perks and cons, they are both agreeably a big step forward for mass technology which is accessible to literally everyone. Though one might ask, how are LED and LCD displays accessible to everyone? Well, in the modern age, almost everything we have at the moment is made out of LED and LCD displays.

Mobile phones, laptops, televisions, road signs, and many other technologies rely on LCD and LED displays to fulfill their function. While digital displays in general might seem common for everybody, those who pay extra attention to display specifications might be able to discern the difference between LEDs and LCDs.

LED vs LCD Displays

While one does not need to be a tech aficionado or a display guru to find out the difference between the two, learning the unique features of both LEDs and LCDs would definitely help anyone in the long run, Whether you are a casual viewer or a business owner who is looking to install panels made out of either of the two in their establishment, there would definitely be benefits in understanding the technology which makes up both LED and LCD displays.

If your assumption is that LED and LCD displays are entirely different from each other, the funny thing is the two are actually interconnected with each other when it comes to the technology they utilize. First of all, to provide context, LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display while on the other hand, LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.

Obviously, the similarity between the two cannot be discerned from this alone, the common belief is that LEDs actually come from the technological developments and foundations of LCDs. Actually, LEDs are able to function correctly thanks to the LCD technology that they possess. Essentially, both displays make use of lamps that are installed at the back of the screen display to produce the colorful lights that all work together in unison in order to project our intended images and videos.

Basically, the main takeaway from this initial knowledge is that not all LCDs are LEDs, however, all LEDs are LCDs. However, this does not mean that LCDs are also single-handedly superior to LEDs as well. There are many other visual perks that LED displays offer that can sometimes surpass the capabilities that LCDs can generally perform.

The first difference between the two is that LCDs make use of fluorescent lamps in order to produce light displays. On the other hand, LEDs. as the name implies, uses light-emitting diodes in order to produce their desired pictures.

Utilizing a different kind of lighting technology, the display options for LEDs are more versatile when compared with the capacities of LCDs. There are actually two backlighting technologies possible with LEDs that we know of so far — these two are edge lighting and full array lighting.

As the name implies, edge lighting places the LEDs along the edge of the screen or panel. While with full array lighting technology, an array of LEDs are lined up all across the screen in order to deliver their desired lighting effects. While there are two technologies available, most LED panels at the moment utilize edge lighting for their displays.

It’s good to learn about the technology behind LEDs and LCDs. But everybody knows that the real debate between the two stems from one of the most important factors that most consumers look at — and that is overall picture quality.

Since LED makes use of newer technology in order to project its displays, there are more options available for LED users. In this round, LED definitely has an advantage over LCDs. There are simply more versatile features available in LED displays compared to the earlier-developed LCD models.

From the deepness of the blacks to the consistency of colors all across the screen, LEDs simply edge out their LCD competitors by a long run. At the end of the day however, what matters the most is the pixel quality a panel displays regardless if it incorporates LED or LCD technology.

Moreover, since LED displays are able to process technological demands in a more efficient manner, it is also widely believed that they are superior to LCDs when it comes to energy saving options. Which for more frugal and financially careful buyers is definitely a plus in their books.

Most exports have pointed out that LEDs consume far less energy than that of LCDs. But the advantages of using LEDs do not stop there alone. It has also been found that LEDs not only spend less energy, but also displays using diodes are space-savers and consume less physical volume.

LEDs are thinner because diodes are far smaller than the lamps that are incorporated in LCD technology. Additionally, since most LED panels use edge lighting technology, the diodes are lined up along the sides of the screen which allows more room for screens and panels to be thinned out even more.

Economically, since LCD technology is older, its is cheaper. So if one is on a tight budget, the obvious choice to make at this point is to go for LCD displays. Even though LED technology is superior in general, LCDs are also a viable choice to make even if the visual capabilities are generally lacking.

To summarize, LED displays provide more features and functions compared to its predecessor, LCD technology. However, the qualities that LCD provides cannot be disregarded as well, given the financial convenience it provides for people who are working with a tighter budget in general.

At the end of the day, if a display is taken care of properly, whether it incorporates LCD or LED technology, then the quality would still be of excellent quality regardless.
